Lying on the Hetao and Tumochuan Flatlands and situated in the northern banks of the Yellow River, Baotou is the largest city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous region, in the People's Republic of China.

Baotou is only 600 km from the capital city, Beijing. Located in the southern region of the Mongolian Plateau, Baotou has to the north the Gobi Desert. With an area of about 28,000 square kilometers, Baotou is a strategic location that connects the Bohai Economic Zone with the north-west.

Baotou is credited to have the country's largest rare earth industrial base, and is also much famed for its facilities that are available for the production of steel, iron, machinery and textiles. Disneyland Vs. Disney World

Among the Disney enthusiasts, the big debate has always been: 'Which is the better Disney - Disneyland or Disney World'. Of course, the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is much larger than the one at Disneyland, but some say that the one at Disneyland has the true spirit of Walt Disney; after all, he built it himself. . . and so the debate goes on.

The Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney wanted to create a family park and initially planned to build it on 8 acres of land. This was too small for his dreams, and today, Disneyland, California, is spread over 180 acres. This was something no one had attempted before. Construction began on July 21, 1954, and Disneyland was opened for public on July 17, 1955. The Magic Kingdom included five different lands:

- Main Street, U.S.A., which was the typical turn of the century city Main Street
- Adventureland, an "exotic tropical place" in the remote jungles of Asia and Africa
- Frontierland, where a person has to relive the pioneer days of the American frontier
- Fantasyland, where classic stories of everyone's youth became realities for youngsters of all ages to participate in
- Tomorrowland looked at the marvels of the future

After its success, Walt Disney had a vision of a much larger amusement park. Initially, 27,000 acres of land was bought in Florida and work started on what Walt Disney called Disneyworld.

After his death, his brother Roy changed the name to Walt Disney World. Walt Disney World, or more commonly Disney World, today is spread over 30,500 acres or about 47 square miles. Disneyworld is gigantic when compared to Disneyland.

The Magic Kingdom of Disneyland was recreated, on a grander scale, at Disney World, with Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland. The Main Street buildings of Disneyworld were bigger and more impressive, and even the castle towered higher in comparison to the original version in Disneyland.

The wondrous world of Disney began when an 18 year old artist, Walter Elias Disney, had a fantasy. At the time, Disney was working in Kansas City as a professional artist at the Pesmin-Rubin Commercial Art Studio. In 1923, this amazing artist produced a series of Alice Comedies for J.M. Wrinkler and this creation led to the creation of Disney Studio. In fact, by 1923, Walter created Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie in 1927 and this character has not stopped entertaining children and adults alike. Eventually, Steamboat Willie became fully synchronized with sound.

For his first color cartoon in 1932, "Flowers and Trees", Walt received the first ever Oscar awarded to an animated film. In 1932, another character as famous as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck made his appearance.

The Mind behind the Magic

Today the concept behind Walter's creation is the most popular holiday destination in the United States. Walt Disney wanted to create a park where families with kids could have fun together. Initial plans of Disneyland were to use 8 acres of land only, but with the expansion of dreams, 8 acres were not enough. Today, Disneyland, California is spread over 180 acres. Construction of Disneyland began on July 21, 1954. The design was something never done before. The plan included five different lands - the Magic Kingdom.

- Main Street, U.S.A. was where people relive the typical turn of the century city Main Street.

- Adventureland was an "exotic tropical place" in the remote jungles of Asia and Africa.

- Frontierland was where people try to relive the pioneer days of the American frontier.

- Fantasyland was created where classic stories of everyone's youth became realities for youngsters of all ages to participate in.

- Tomorrowland looked at the marvels of the future.

This $17,000,000 magical park, Disneyland, was opened on for public on July 17, 1955.

With the success of Disneyland, Walt Disney had a vision of an amusement park on a much bigger scale. He decided to have his new Disneyland in the East. With a good year-round weather, Orlando, Florida was selected to be the place. Initially, 27,000 acres of swampland was purchased in 1964-65, in Florida. Walt Disney called this new park Disneyworld, which was later, after his death, changed to Walt Disney World, by his brother Roy.

Like Disneyland, his plans for Disneyworld included the Magic Kingdom. His plans also included the city of the future - which he called an experimental prototype community of tomorrow (EPCOT).
He wanted EPCOT to display all possible scientific advances. Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, without seeing Disneyworld and EPCOT. His brother, Roy Disney, ensured that Walt's dream was completed and Walt Disney World opened to the public on October 1, 1971.

Thanks to Walt Disney and his family, we have two great Disney Parks in the United States to enjoy. Walter Disney was the man behind the dream and his brother, Roy, continued manifesting the dream. Today, Disney World, the second of the dream series, is the most popular of all the theme parks in the world and covers an area of 30,500 acres or about 47 square miles and Disney Land, the first of the dream series, is also quite popular. The dream of Walt Disney continues to spin The Magic of Disney and will do so for many years.

1. Keep Them Busy

Chances are, unless you are going to a very kid-centric location, your children will be very bored. Try purchasing travel games such as tiny versions of chess or checkers. There are also plenty of low cost games you can play in a car like eye spy or 20 questions. Having a variety of games and activities to keep their children occupied and keep their minds off of the journey is always a good idea.

2. For Long Car Rides

Keep in mind when designing an itinerary of games that children typically get tired of playing the same game twice. For your benefit, you can design games that take a long time to complete. For example, you can play the ABC game. In this game, you have to find all the letters of the alphabet from signs, licence plates, etc. Letters can only be found outside the car and must be verified by others in the car to make sure that they are not just making up signs. As an added challenge and to prevent cheating, you can remove licence plates from the possible things you can get letters from. It can be quite difficult to find the letters Q,U,V,X,Y and Z. To keep things interesting you can make it a race and whoever finishes the alphabet first wins. This is a great game for small children as it reinforces their learning the alphabet.

3. Keep Things Novel

You might want to buy some new toys or games for your children. A new book, especially, can last an entire trip if your child loves to read. Just be careful, however, as reading while in a car can, for some people, make them feel nauseous.

4. Babies & Flights

Lot's of parents wonder whether or not they should bring their baby's car seat with them when they go on a plane. The question to ask is are you going to be travelling by car at your destination? If so they you'll need to bring the car seat anyway. If you are not travelling by car and forget or decide not to bring your car seats, you can sometimes rent them. In general however it's a better idea to take the car seat with you. Another tip is to give your baby a bottle while the plane is taking off to calm them down and prevent your baby's ears from popping.

5. Strollers

Let's face it even tiny babies feel heavy after a while in your arms, and don't forget about toddlers who all of the sudden tell you they can't walk any longer (often they tell you this at the most inconvenient times). A baby stroller solves these problems. The great thing is that most infant car seats snap onto a travel system stroller. This makes it both simple and easy to take both the stroller and the baby seat along on trips. The other option is a lightweight stroller that has a built in carrying strap, that's comfortable and easy to haul around.

Bali island in Indonesia is renowned for its natural beauty and as a fabulous tourist attraction. However, the island is also known for its terrorist attacks in recent years. Since then, the people of Bali have recovered and the island is now a hotspot for tourists from all over the world once again.

The island's ecology and geography are greatly influenced by the towering mountain range of volcanoes that dominate the island. These majestic volcanoes created Bali's stunning mountainous landscape and they occasionally regenerate its soils and help produce heavy rains that provide this resort island with precious fresh water.

The Balinese considered the island's many volcanoes, lakes and spring as sacred and treat them with respect and awe. If you are a tourist traveling to Bali for your holiday vacation, you will be awestruck with the sheer majesty of the volcanoes. These natural landscapes are major tourist attractions and many tourist go sightseeing the volcanoes on helicopter tours so that they can view the volcanoes in all its splendor and take awesome pictures. This grand old dame of a volcano sits in a giant caldera that contains a lake that is a few miles long and over a mile wide. Mount Batur is actually a very active volcano and can erupt moment as it erupted with great frequency but the eruptions are less violent these days except in a giant eruption in 1917 which claimed thousands of lives and destroyed hundreds of temples and villages.

Hiking up Mount Batur in the wee small hours of the the morning has become something of a "must do" thing for many tourists in Bali. You will need to bring along a sweater as it can get a little chilly at the volcano summit.

There is also a little coffee shop at the rim selling drinks for thirsty hikers and many children and women in flip flops balancing buckets of soft drinks on their heads scampering around trying to earn your tourist dollar. As the sun rises, you will get a picturesque view of Lombok and other surrounding islands.

One very interesting hike on Mt Batur is the climb down the inside of the crater from Penelokan to Kedisan. There are boats at Toya Bungkah Lake to take you across the lake to a village called Trunyan. This village is notorious for its mortuary traditions because instead of cremating or burying their deceased, the Trunyan villagers leave dead human bodies to decompose naturally in a designated cemetery.

Although Bali is known for rice cultivation, its volcanic soil is actually not well suited for such activities. The soil is finely textured and well drained, so water soaks through the soil rapidly and thus precious water is wasted. The solution therefore lies in repeated and vigorous ploughing which make the soil less permeable.

So if you are visiting Bali for your holiday vacations, do not miss out a sightseeing trip to view Bali's majestic volcanoes, better yet, take a helicopter tour of this spectacular tourist attraction.

Here’s our top 10 countries to avoid travelling to, and the reasons for the high risk factor! The risk is far from conclusive (the foreign office’s travel advice lists many more countries), but to me, these are the ones that all travellers should avoid like the plague:

10) Liberia

Economic hardship in Liberia is currently making outbreaks of violence common, and foreigners (especially westerners) are at risk targets due to their affluence. This extra likelihood of incident ensures that no UK travel insurance provider would risk offering you cover if you choose to visit Liberia

9) Nepal

Occasional acts of terrorism and political violence in urban areas make Nepal off-limits for those who want to get travel insurance. In September this year, three nearly simultaneous bombs went off in the capital of Kathmandu, killing 3 and injuring many innocent bystanders.

8) Haiti

Haiti is considered off limits to many travellers on account of the high risk of kidnappings and civil unrest that is prominent. At the time of writing, there have been 12 kidnappings of American travellers in 2007 – mostly criminal in nature. In the past, these kidnappings have ended in physical and sexual assaults and shootings. The potential for spontaneous protests and demonstrations has also been known to result in unexpected violence, day or night. It’s no surprise that the government’s travel advice is not to travel here!

7) Yemen

Due to the high levels of terrorist activity in Yemen, westerners are advised to steer clear of Yemen. If this is not possible, then all travellers are encouraged to stay vigilant and to keep a low profile to avoid attacks or kidnapping. The situation is so grave that the US Embassy often restricts American citizens from certain hotels, restaurants and shopping areas.

6) Israel

The Gaza Strip and West Bank has seen immense violence in recent months between Israeli and Palestinian factions, and shootings, kidnappings and violence demonstrations have occurred in each. The region’s continued instability makes travel to Israel widely recommended against – the risk of abduction or worse makes travel insurance impossible to obtain.

5) Democratic Republic of Congo

The democratic republic of Congo remains one of the most dangerous places to travel in Africa, where violence, neglect and corruption has left the country distinctly damaged. Fighting erupted in the streets of Kinshasa in March this year, and the situation remains volatile despite the immediate threat of violence calming down. Travel outside of Kinshasa is difficult and dangerous with security, especially in the north and easy, being unstable. Any traveller brave enough to travel to the Congo should be extremely cautious, avoid the North Kivu district which is the backdrop to armed conflict between government troops and army rebels, avoid crowds and keep a close eye on local media.

4) Burma (Myanmar)

While the human rights situation makes Myanmar an ethically uneasy place to visit, currently there is a lot of personal risk involved as well. Throughout September, the anti-government protests sparked a violent crackdown from the authorities and made international headlines. Although the dusk-til-dawn curfew imposed in some of the towns has been lifted, it still remains an uncertain time to visit the country and you’re unlikely to find any global travel insurance company who will insure you.

3) Colombia

Colombia remains one of the most dangerous places to travel in the world thanks to the crime the country suffers from. The illicit drug trade in urban areas such as Cali and Buenaventura means that there is often a high risk of violence, while the more rural areas expose visitors to the country at risk from narcoterrorist groups who will often kidnap civilians to use for ransom or to gain media attention. Naturally UK travel insurance companies are loathe to insure travellers who choose to ignore these warning and travel to Colombia anyway.

2) Afghanistan

With the war on terror in Afghanistan still fresh in the mind, it’s no surprise that the country remains a big no-go area. Western tourists are obvious kidnap and assassination targets, as many of the disbanded Taliban and Al-Qa’ida forces remain at large and hostile to the new regieme. Additionally, the country remains unsafe due to tribal groups, explosive devices, landmines, military operations and acts of terrorism. Unsurprisingly, the government’s travel advice is to avoid travelling here at all costs!

1) Iraq

Given the high profile nature of western kidnappings by various insurgent groups, and the regular acts of terrorism and hostility to Western troops, it is no surprise that no travel insurance companies will insure travellers to the troubled country. The instability is caused by various groups – Ba’ath regime remnants, transnational terrorists and criminal elements have been known to attack convoys en-route to venues, hotels, restaurants, checkpoints and police stations.

While holidaymakers are unlikely to be affected by these less touristy locations, their riskiness means that business travellers will have to forgo their travel insurance if they are unable to cancel their trips.

Campervan Rental in Australia

Although Australia is an island it is also a continent and for this reason alone it is large. Very large. To get around the country there is a very large and competitive air travel network. The southern parts of the country also offer fairly substantial train travel while the more remote areas of the northern part of the country mainly only offer bus travel.

One other option which is becoming very popular is to hire or rent a Campervan.

Considering that with today's prices a single bed in a hostel dormitory verages around $27.00AUD per night per person. So for three people traveling together that equals an average daily cost - just to rest your head for the night - of $81.00.

It is no wonder that Campervans are becoming so popular.

A basic campervan vehicle can take two forms. One type is the Camper Wagon or Campa Car which is often a large Ford or Holden Station wagon (you may know this type of vehicle as an Estate) which comes equipped with full camping equipment including tents, Gas cooker, linen, cookware and crockery and camp chairs for each person.

These vehicles can comfortably seat 4 adult passengers and the daily rental prices start from as little as $32.00AUD per day including insurance. When you compare that price with hostel accommodation then the saving is substantial. In fact with 4 people travelling, the savings cover the cost of fuel and often camping fees in campervan parks.

The most popular type of vehicle rented in Australia is the HiTop. These units are based on a Toyota commercial van but have an extended raised main roof, so you can stand inside. They are fully fitted and most have a 2 way fridge, sink and 2 burner stove all bulit in.They are very popular units - over 85% of the rentals that we get are for the HiTop unit. They are fairly similar across the different companies and have the same standard "basics". The majority of these units, although they may have slightly different layouts, all basically present with the same features. Rental pricing does vary quite a bit from company to Company and prices are also season dependent.

A HiTop rental starts from about $62.00 per day and can go as high as $120.00 per day. Rental rates are seasonal and very dependant on the length of the rental. The longer the rental the less the daily rental rate. Be warned that most Campervan rental companies will not even look at a rental less than seven days so if your planning a short trip (less than 6 days) you may not find it easy to secure a rental campervan.

Are there "Other Costs" in Renting a Campervan?

Yes. So we'll take a look at what costs are really involved for you. If you understand this better you will be able to make a better choice when you go to book your campervan Holiday.

Daily Rate

This is the actual cost per day to hire the vehicle and usually includes basic insurance. Basic insurance will cover you and your passengers in the event of an accident with another vehicle. Some rental companies do not include "Single Vehicle Accidents" - where you drive into a tree or a wall - and may charge an additional fee to cover this. If it is not explained to your clearly what the Insurance covers - ASK!

Stamp Duty

In Australia the Government charges a 2% fee on any contracts relating to the rental of gods or services. This includes unit/apartment/house rental, car hire and Campervan rental. It is not a secret little fee that Camper rental companies have created to squeeze a few more dollars from you. It is a Mandatory charge by the government. Some rental companies may offer to waive this fee - which simply means they have included it in the cost of the rental.

One Way Fee

This is usually applied if you are renting the van from one city or state location to another - for example - Sydney To Cairns.

This fee is fairly common and has come about as a result of some companies having to engage professional drivers to collect a vehicle and return it after a rental. With some of the smaller rental companies the fee cover's the cost of the Agent at the destination depot to "turn the vehicle around" - ie; pepare it for another rental.

One Way Fees vary from $120.00 to $495.00 Depending upon the vehicle type and destination.

Security Bond/Excess
The Security Bond or Excess is the amount you are liable for in the event of a major accident. In other words this is the maximum amount you would have to pay if the vehicle was damaged beyond repair. With many rental companies this Security Bond or Excess is in the region of $4,500.00 to $6,000.00. With some companies this figure can be only $1,000.00. So when you are enquiring about a Campervan rental make a point of asking what the Bond/Excess is.

Many rental companies offer an "optional" Collision Damage Waiver" (CDW) which effectively means you pay an additional amount per day on top of the rental but reduce the Bond/Excess by half. This CDW can vary from $10.00 per day to $26.00 per day.

The reason for the wide variation in these and rental rates is due to the nature of Campervan Rental Insurance Companies. There are about 3 companies in Australia that will insure Campervans on Rental. Some have one set of rules and the others have another set.

The important thing about all these "fluctuations" is that if you are not knowledgeable in what the costs are it may end up costing you far more.

Following are 2 possible rental scenarios over a 15 day period from Sydney to Cairns rented from two separate rental companies. One, at a daily rate of $75.00 per day including Base insurance with a Security Bond/Excess of $1,000.00 and the other at a lower daily rate but with a higher Bond/Excess.which may help clarify the "costs" of a rental.

1. Company A - A campervan is to be rented at a daily rate of $75.00 per day including Base insurance with a Security Bond/Excess of $1,000.00.

Rental Value is $1,125.00
Stamp Duty $ 22.50
One Way Fee $ 170.00
Total Rental Value $1,317.50 with a $1,000.00 Bond/Excess.


2. Company B - A campervan is to be rented at a daily rate of $65.00 per day including Base insurance with a Security Bond/Excess of $5,000.00.

Rental Value is $ 975.00
CDW @ $20.00/day $ 300.00 (reduces the Bond to $2,500.00)
Stamp Duty $ 19.50
One Way Fee $ 170.00
Total Rental Value $1,464.50 with a $2,500.00 Bond/Excess.

The above example shows that with the same rental over two different companies there can be a difference of $147.00 and a Bond/Excess of over $1,500.00 difference after paying more.

The message here is to be careful. When you hear someone quote you a really good daily rate there may be hidden extras which may end up costing more than the other company who may have quoted you a higher daily rate but with a lower Bond/Excess.

Other Costs / Options

Some companies offer extra items that can be rented. These mat include outdoor bar-b-ques, portable toilets ("Porta-Potti"), Child booster seats and baby capsules. If you may be requiring some of these extras then just simply ask if these things are available.

A Word Of Caution

Most Campervan and Motorhome rental websites advertise vehicles that are 6 berth Winnebago Motorhomes. However often these are not actually available and we have, on many occasions while acting as an agent for another Australian company in Cairns, found the customers have just stepped off a plane to discover that what they are getting in the way of a 6 berth motorhome, just is not what I have shown them.

So if you are booking your trip from outside Australia please really make sure that the vehicle you are getting is what you actually saw on the website and believed you will be getting. Have the company email you a picture of the type of vehicle. You may need it!

Also watch out for "false descriptions"..eg: The company's confirmation email to you reads… "We take pleasure in confirming your booking for a 6 berth Mercedes Motorohome". You may just be getting a large van that sleeps 6, and it may very well be an Iveco or a Fiat and not a Mercedes.

Whomever you book your Campervan (or Motorohome rental) through they will usually send you some form of Confirmation that will detail your rental. READ THIS thoroughly and if there any items on your Confirmation ask the company to clarify it.

In general Campervan Rental in Australia is very safe. There are the odd one or two "shifty" operators but all in all it is a very safe way to see the country and there is an amazing variety of Australia too see.

Traveling with Medical Disabilities

Traveling America-ful with a medical disability can be challenging, but it is worth the effort you make to finally have a successful, fun filled vacation.

My wife and I were looking forward to my retirement. My wife had retired from her Licensed Therapist practice already and she was just waiting for me to make my retirement official. Our kids were “grown and gone” and we were looking forward to just picking up for weeks at a time on one of our spontaneous acts and traveling across this country of ours. We had upgraded our timeshare to accommodate our dream of traveling America.

However, strange things happen on the way to “life”. About 6 months before my official retirement my wife was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). On August 4, 2006 she began a schedule of 3-day a week dialysis treatment at the Mayo Clinic. Each dialysis treatment is at least 4 hours long.

We had a tough time trying to make sense of what was happening. Why was this happening to us in the prime of our lives? How could we possibly take trips with a regimen of these 3-day a week 4 hour dialysis treatments (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)? There was at least 1 day between treatments and no more than 2 days (Saturday and Sunday). Needless to say we spent some time with our therapists and getting in touch with our spiritual side.

I think I was more stressed than my wife. She insisted that I get out, do something. I normally fish or try to play golf, but I thought I would try to do something creative. So I wrote a few lyrics (got them copyrighted) and thought about creating a website that would allow visitors to tell other visitors about their travel experiences.

Travel America-ful advisory and tips

If we wanted to do traveling of any kind while she is undergoing dialysis we would have some “road blocks” to overcome. For instance: Because she had been placed on the kidney transplant list, in the event of an available kidney match (I am not a match to donate my kidney to my wife) we had to be able to get back to the kidney transplant unit within 2-3 hours after we are contacted.

Not all dialysis units were the same – some were cleaner than others (the fear of infection is always a consideration). Mayo has one of the best (if not the best) dialysis units in America.

Not considering the 2-3 hours window we could only be away for no more than 2 days because of the dialysis schedule. We could probably stretch it for another day, but that would be putting additional risk into the equation. We were not willing to do that.

But, we were determined to travel. We started out by taking little excursions of one day – leave Saturday morning and returning Sunday morning. Then we extended our travel time from Saturday morning and returning Monday morning to get her to her Monday dialysis treatment. Next, we began leaving on Friday evening after her dialysis treatment – she was normally very tired right after her treatment and absolutely famished. So, I would prepare her a meal (she had some food restrictions) and she would eat it in the car as we drove to wherever we were going and then take a nap.

Next the big one! My wife said “Why not plan a trip for one month?” I was not as sure of this as she was. My wife spoke with her physician and then worked with the Mayo Clinic Social Workers for several months to line up dialysis units in various states up the Northeast coast (Washington Area, New York City Area, Atlanta Area and New London, Connecticut Area).

Through careful planning and coordination with the Mayo Clinic Social Worker we were able to schedule 12 dialysis treatments over the 1 month period in 4 different states. My wife is a master at establishing relationships with new people and she was able to do that in each of the different dialysis locations without major incidents.

Getting out was absolutely wonderful. We are from New York and it was great getting back into the hustle-bustle for a few days. Although, my wife could not get as much activity as she would have normally, she thoroughly enjoyed herself. As did I.

Our experience has led us to offer a few suggestions to those who might be holding back on traveling because of your own medical disability.

1. Discuss your plans with your physician

2. Work with the resources available to you – Social Workers, Travel Agents, etc.

3. Have alternate plans – if you run out of medication; if your condition worsens, etc.

4. Plan, plan, plan

5. Enjoy

Student backpackers flock to the country for the rich, delicious and inexpensive food, as well as cheap lodging and amazing sights. The food is an experience in itself ' thick breaded naan, spicy mushroom masala, lentil dal, and rich potato somalas will leave you with cravings you may never get rid of. India is unique in its cuisine, specialising of course in heavily spiced dishes fairly exploding with flavor. The exotic quality of the food mingles well with the sights and sounds ' a scitar player sings loudly as he walks down the street, the monkeys screech from the temple, pots and pans jangle noisily on the back of a water buffalo. No matter what your reasons for coming, your experience in India is bound to be more than you expected. Travel Writers Need Compelling Reasons To Travel

Just think of the greatest adventurers who ever lived and the greatest journeys ever undertaken: the Jews, Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus and Charles Darwin come to mind. All of them had compelling reasons for setting off on dangerous journeys into the unknown. What they found (in their cases the Promised Land, China, America and evolution respectively) soldered them into history and made them famous, but also opened the world to travel as never before.

Travel writing ever since has echoed the odysseys of these great people. Writers still feel it incumbent on them to have some higher purpose to their journeys beyond mere self-indulgence or curiosity. On the rare occasions when travel writers break this rule they tend to fall ill or become irredeemably cranky when they sit down to put their experiences on paper.

The range of reasons travel writers dream up to focus their journeys range from the absurd to the sublime. Take that outstanding wordsmith Bill Bryson. This man literally thought up journeys he could take, to create fodder for his witty irony and superb humorous descriptions. A walk along the Appalachian Trail with an old school friend (do you remember Katz?) became much more than 'A Walk in the Woods' as it was entitled. It was a humorous ramble through the American nature tourist culture and a lambasting of the authorities responsible for the national parks of the United States. It did not matter that Bryson completed only a tiny part of the trail. This incredibly long hike (Bryson spends a few pages embarrassing all the authorities who cannot agree on its exact length) served one purpose and one purpose only; it gave Bryson something to write about.

Similarly Bryson's book about rural America entitled 'The Lost Continent' has a very thin basis to it: Bryson vaguely travels the roads his parents followed, when they took their children on madcap long haul treks across the United States to see the sights (and sites of famous battles and historical occurrences) and generally scrounged their way along on a shoestring budget, to the mystification of the Bryson children. Again Bryson gets his teeth into a subject without much justification. Not that he needs it, you understand.
Bryson made a career of taking whole continents and wrapping them around his tongue, as in 'Down Under', his dry yet informative take on Australia. He went there because he had always wanted to see it and, as the subtext suggests, he was looking for an alternative place to live. He and his family had already done England and New England. As it happened, the Bryson family returned from New Hampshire to Britain, giving down under the thumbs down. Just too many snakes per square kilometer I suppose.

Now we come to the sublime reasons for travel. There are tales of pilgrimage, such as Shirley MacLaine's account of her walk the length of the Santiago de Compostela Camino in northern Spain, the ancient 500 mile pilgrimage route initiated by St James de Compostela ending at Santiago. 'Camino: a journey of the spirit' never reaches any conclusions and elicits no discernible greatness of spirit in the writer, but it surely gave Ms MacLaine fodder for a bestselling book in the bland genre of Californian spiritualism.

Ineffably more substantial is the marvelous book by William Dalrymple 'From the Holy Mountain' in which this handsome young Scot journeys to the places visited by John Moschos some 1500 hundred years before. His beautiful journey through the dying remnants of Byzantium in our own age (he traveled in 1997) is an unforgettable book by a marvelously intelligent Catholic probing the embers of Eastern Orthodox religion.

Between the absurd and the sublime reasons for travel lie many others. In 'African Rainbow' Lorenzo and Mirella Ricciardi traveled along the waterways in Africa, evidently searching for the ultimate noble savage in the European mold. They never found him or her but their book was published. It ends up being an uneasy journey of a couple to a continent they didn't understand.

In 'The Great Railway Bazaar' Paul Theroux travels on the Orient Express, the Khyber Pass Local, the Golden Arrow, the Mandalay Express, an odyssey on great trains from London through Europe and Asia, across Siberia. And his eye misses nothing as he describes this travel mode of a bygone age and these out-of-the-way places, but I always feel that Theroux travels and writes under duress rather than from compulsion, rather like Shiva Naipaul in 'North of South'.

Naipaul visited the insalubrious African countries: Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya, where Asians have been personae non grata in the past, and in some places still are, to find out what makes Africa tick. Of course no one does know what makes Africa tick, not even Naipaul.

Never mind that these men seem to have been uncomfortable about their journeys. Both are renowned travel writers, not least due to their dogged purposefulness. The point, it seems, is to have some intention when moving across the landscape. A traveler without intention is merely a wanderer.

Looking for one of the many cheap holidays to Spain is simple if you have access to a computer and the internet. Many of the online booking companies offer discount packages if you travel slightly off season, which may mean planning your vacation either just in front or just behind the peak tourist season.

In Spain the peak vacation times are the summer months of June to September, but the warm weather often extends well past September and even in April and May. In fact, you may find that a holiday outside the peak periods is in fact much more enjoyable – and bearable. We all know someone like my friend Carol. She has done fairly well for herself and holds down a reasonable job. The City Hopper – Cuba travel by Train

In theory there are trains between a handful of the island’s major destinations, including Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Cienfuegos, Pinar del Rio and Santa Clara, negating the need for one of Cuba’s car rental services. The truth is that the majority of the trains are unreliable, and many locals actually find hitch-hiking in a Cuban car a more reliable option! That said, those that are not easily frustrated and want to explore Cuba’s rail network, unperturbed by unexpected breakdowns can find approximate schedules under different city descriptions at the stations.

The one exception to the unreliable rule is the Tren Francés service between Havana and Santiago de Cuba. This is considerably more reliable than the other services, due to being donated by France just a few years ago. The service runs on alternate days and is a good bet to get you between two of the island’s biggest cities for those not wanting to chance Cuban car rental.

The Adventurer – Government Hitch-Hiking Service

The Cuban government has initiated a novel state run system of allowing visitors to travel the island by road without using a hire car in Cuba. “El Amarillo” (“the yellow guy” – a reference to their uniforms) administrators run stretches of road where certain vehicles are required to stop and pick up hitchhikers. During the day, this will set you back around 20 pesos from one city to the next, making it by far the cheapest way of getting around Cuba. As well as being cheap, this is an exciting system. As most of the hitchable rides will be on the back of large trucks, basking in the sunshine may sound like the most romantic way to see the Cuban countryside. Some may think it sounds a little dangerous, but thrill seekers will delight in the experience – especially as the roads are almost completely deserted by Western standards!

The Car Buff – Catch a ride in a Yank Tank

Cuba’s car rental services offer a day’s usage from CUC 65 (£35.80) including insurance, plus the cost of a full tank of petrol. Most of the available cars for hire in Cuba are modern European and Asian models, but in certain quarters, car buffs will be able to catch a ride in a classic yank tank – cars from before the revolution kept in tip-top condition due to the trade embargo preventing newer models flowing in. As these are privately owned, this is usually negotiated with the owner, but its not unusual to negotiate a private ride in a classic American car.

Those who are tempted in by car travel on the island should be aware that car hire in Cuba is (comparatively) expensive, the roads are not well sign posted, and confusing one-way systems can make driving a real challenge for visitors. That said, most car enthusiasts will probably see this as part of the fun, and anyone with an interest in cars owes it to themselves to hire one for at least a day and enjoy road transport in an entirely different environment on their tailor made Cuba holiday. Just don’t forget that your Cuban car must be driven on the right!

The Athlete – Cuba travel by Bike

If you’re feeling fit, and like seeing the real beauty of the island, you’ll find travelling in Cuba by bike pretty hard to beat. The calm roads and stunning scenery make Cuba a perfect and safe place for cycling – outside of Havana, you’ll hardly see any Cuban cars! The only problem is that you may be best off bringing your own bike into the country, as the bicycles readily available on the island aren’t really suitable for off-road trekking. And of course, the same goes for spare parts – you don’t want to break down in the middle of nowhere, with nowhere stocking the spare parts you need to get moving again!

Cyclists are often treated as a curiosity by locals, so don’t be surprised to be approached by some enthusiastic Cubans intrigued at your mode of transportation!

Finally, if you’re looking to explore some of the islands off the southern shore of Cuba, you have little choice but to set sail from one of the two main bases – Cienfuegos or Trinidad. Cuba’s waters are calm and tranquil, and this is a delightfully relaxed way of getting to your destination – very much in the spirit of the Caribbean lifestyle!

However you choose to travel in Cuba, you’re guaranteed a unique holiday experience. Travel Insurance - It pays to check the small print!

A common thread in most complaints over travel insurance is that ‘I didn’t realise I had to do that’ or ‘no-one told me I couldn’t do that.’ Whilst sometimes this is a totally justified call because miss-selling of travel insurance, though less frequent than in the past, still occurs, there is still a many people who take travel insurance out by simply ticking the box on the holiday booking form without as much as seeing what they are covered for. This is far from ideal when it comes to making a claim because pleading ignorance is never a strong position to come from. But you can help yourself if you follow a few simple rules:

# Always get a report from an official source within 24 hours if something goes wrong. A police report for theft, a tour operator’s reports for baggage delay and loss, an airline letter if you suffer travel delay and a Property Irregularity Report before you leave the airport if your luggage is lost or delayed. Without these, you will find that insurers will not readily settle your claim.

# Know what valuables you are taking with you and take extra care of them. Valuables will be defined in your policy but generally includes all jewellery, mobile phones, computer games and equipment and cameras. Add to this list the personal money you take with you. By extra care, we mean you should lock them away in a safe in your room or carry them with you. They should never be left unattended and never in checked in baggage otherwise this will invalidate a claim.

# Keep receipts. Not only will this help to substantiate your claim but you are more likely to get close to value of the lost items back, subject to wear and tear. If no receipt is provided then the maximum amount that will be paid back will be capped at a low level. If several unreceipted items are claimed then this will also raise suspicions that the claim is fraudulent and could be investigated.

# Do call the Medical Assistance line if you have to go into hospital abroad or need medical treatment that could be costly. It is worthwhile doing this for anything that could be above £250. Once this is on record, you are generally well covered up to the agreed amounts.
# And finally, whilst this guidance is for travel insurance policies, many people will have a household policy in force that should cover ‘all risks’ up to a set value and this could also be used for a claims for personal belongings lost or stolen whilst on holiday but do check the small print again to see what exclusions apply.

Going skiing? Take out travel insurance - you know it makes sense

There is a one in seven chance of ending up seeking medical care during a skiing holiday and despite this a quarter of us will take to the ‘piste’ with no cover at all this winter. So say recent reports in the media. Apparently, more than 3million ‘Brits’ are looking to hit the slopes this season but you cannot avoid the element of risk inherent on a winter sports holiday, no matter if you’re a beginner sliding down a nursery slope or a more confident skier cruising those blues and reds. The net result is that an increasing number of skiers and snowboarders are injured each year and, while falls, tumbles and the occasional wipe out are part of the holiday experience, you could be hit hard when it goes wrong. Being rescued from the ski slopes will now cost you well over £75, while medical expenses could set you back a further £250. The more serious injury cases could be even more painful both physically and financially. Repatriation to London from the Alps will cost around £2,500, rising to a hefty £6,000 from the USA.

And if you think that a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will provide you with full medical cover while skiing in Europe, then think again. The EHIC, which replaced the E111, entitles you to low cost, sometimes free, basic medical treatment on the same terms as all nationals in EU states, but it should not be viewed as a substitute for proper travel insurance as the EHIC will not cover costly extras such as an air ambulance, personal liability, trip cancellation, or loss of baggage.

That said, do not assume a standard travel insurance policy is enough, as most winter sports travel insurance cover has to be bought as an extra option and, even then, check the small print on your policy. It would be wise to check that the heli-sking or freestyle skiing that you intend to do is covered, not to mention those ‘off piste’ activities you have planned as your ski travel insurance policy could very well exclude these and that could mean being saddled with an unexpected bill if you get injured.

The golden rule is ‘Get the best cover for the activities you are planning to do’. This is one area of travel insurance where buying cheap travel insurance could definitely end up being a false economy.

Travel insurance for holidays at home – worth considering?

Most cheap travel insurance bought in the UK is aimed at people resident in the UK and indeed, will require customers to indicate that they have lived in the UK for a period of six months. It is also a fact that most people buy travel insurance for trips and holidays abroad but insurers do offer policies for travel just within the UK. It is not uncommon to find that Ireland will be included in this definition. The big advantage of UK only cover is that the premiums can be ridiculously low - well below £5 for a 3 day break is very common place. But is it worth taking out in the first place? The answer really depends on the type of holiday planned, the length of stay and whether you want to accept the risk of not being covered if something does go wrong. It is also worth remembering that UK travel insurance cover is generally included if you take out the more expensive Europe of Worldwide cover, though do check the small print rather than assuming that this is always the case. A Europe or Worldwide annual multi-trip travel insurance policy will be more expensive as an initial payment up front but will cover you for an unlimited number of trips abroad, and in the UK, throughout the year, provided the length of stay of each trip does not exceed the policy limit, normally around 31 days away per trip.

So is a UK travel insurance policy worth considering? Probably yes if only one or two short breaks a year are planned and it will be very inexpensive to purchase for the cover provided. This can be very useful should you subsequently cancel a trip, say for illness, as your holiday costs will be reimbursed subject to any excesses to pay. Your personal effects will probably be covered too which is an important point to consider as theft and loss is not just confined to holidays on the ‘Costas’ – these things happen at home too. What you will almost certainly not be covered for will be for medical emergencies and expenses as insurers argue that the NHS is available for such instances and will point out that travel insurance is not a substitute for private medical insurance. The lack of medical cover in UK only travel insurance policies is the main reason why insurers can offer these policies for the very low prices on offer.

On balance, travel insurance for UK holidays and short breaks is probably a good buy for those holidaymakers who tend to stay at home for their breaks away and there is an increasing number of people who are doing this. One final word of warning though is do check the small print as many, if not most, insurers do require you to have proof of booked accommodation for a minimum stay of normally 2 nights away for the policy to be in force so the Sunday ‘trip out’ is definitely outside this definition!

Hix Island House is designed for tranquillity, peace and quiet, so there are no telephones or televisions. Part of the eco principles involves heating by solar panels, and even the water collected and heated is twice used as it is directed to the fruit trees after humans have had their use from it!!

It is true to say that whilst the Hix Island House whilst lacking the creature comforts of a resort, still gives you a luxury vacation experience in Puerto Rico. As Hix Island House is on a hillside means a cooling breeze, and the thirteen acre site means it is nicely secluded, and completely rural. You still aren’t far from town, or the beautiful white sand beaches and bays of the south coast, and some of the best restaurants on Vieques are close by.

The first step in traveling with a pet is to make sure that you can do so. Although a good number of airlines will allow pets on their planes, not all will. You may be in a predicament if you plan to depart from a small airport with only one or two airlines. If they do not accept pets or if their rules and restrictions are too much for you to handle, you will want to examine other nearby airports, especially those that are larger in size.

When traveling by air with your pet or pets, it is important to remember that you will be charged an additional fee. Unfortunately, many first time pet travelers believe that they can use their pets and their pet carriers to count towards as a carry-on bag or a checked bag. This isn’t how it works though. You will, almost always, be charged an extra fee for traveling with a pet. This extra fee will likely depend on the airline in question and well as your pet’s location, such as in the cabin or in the baggage compartment.

That leads to another important point. Even with some of the airlines that allow pets, like cats and dogs, aboard their flights, not all allow pets to be in the cabin with other passengers. This is particularly common on small planes where allergies may be a big concern. If you cannot part with your pet, be sure to search for an airline that will allow you to keep him or her in the cabin with you. With that said, remember that the size of your pet will also play a huge factor in your options.

Regardless of where your pet is stored for the plane ride, you will need to have a pet carrier or crate for them. Many airlines have specific rules and restrictions on what type can be used. Speaking of pet crates and carriers, it is important to make sure that you give your pet enough room to stand and move around a little bit. Remember that many of the so-called benefits of these polices will already be covered through your statutory rights, especially if you take the added precaution of booking with a credit card. If you are holidaying in the EU then an E111 form will also give you free basic medical cover. If you are going to book travel insurance then use an online comparison site, get lots of different quotes, and make sure that the policy actually offers you a useful and realistic level of cover.

Don’t raid the mini bar

We all know that Kit-Kats taste better when you’ve just paid £2 for them, but there is no need to for such extravagance when there is a Spar on the corner of every street in the world. Stock up on drinks and snacks before you get to your hotel room, and if you must nick stuff from the bar then choose the easily replaceable stuff and buy new ones to pop back in the next morning.

Monday is free day

Many countries offer free admission to museums, galleries and exhibitions on Mondays so make sure that you take advantage. If you fancy a cultural weekend away then you may be better off taking-off on the Sunday to ensure you can enjoy this cultural bonanza gratis.

Lunch is cheaper than dinner

Bed Bugs - Travelling Without Getting Stung

With the rash of reports from travelers around the world getting stung by bedbugs and bringing them home it is no wonder people are in fear every time they leave home. Whether you are hiking in a remote area staying in a flophouse or traveling first class staying at a five star resort you are in danger of an attack of these blood thirsty vermin. Here are a few things you can do to dramatically reduce your chance of bed bug bites though.

• First, never put your bags or clothes on the bed. This common mistake is a virtual invitation for the bugs to hitch a ride home with you. Never leave your clothes or bags on the hotel floor.

• Look behind the headboard and pull the bed out a foot or so look all around the bed for black specks. These creatures are very small if you see anything suspicious call the front desk. Leave the bed out from the wall during your stay. Bed bugs can not fly so if they have been coming from the nightstand they will have to get to you some other way.

• Take a roll of clear packing tape with you while you travel. Wrap the legs of the bed sticky side out to trap the bed bugs trying to get to you. I know this seems extreme but you would rather feel weird than get stung.

• Pull all of the bedding off the sides of the bed and look under the seams of the mattress. You are looking for something that looks like dirt smudges. This is the trail of blood and feces left by the bed bugs. If you find this leave the hotel once you find an infestation you should leave as fast as possible.

• If you are an avid traveler I suggest taking two new king-size sheets and sewing them together on the bottom and sides. Use this at night like a big sleeping bag. Make sure and inspect and fold in the morning. Place this in a garbage bag and seal it while returning home. Unpack this before anything else and wash with the hottest water you have before using again.

• Before leaving the hotel carefully inspect you luggage. Look under all the seams, the bugs you are looking for are sometimes small as a pinhead. Any discoloration, red marks, or stains are tell-tale signs of bed bugs.

• Upon arriving home do not unpack your luggage in your bedroom. Unpack your luggage in your garage. Immediately wash your clothes in the hottest setting your fabrics will stand. Bag up any dry cleaning and take it there ASAP. Leave your luggage in the garage or place a bag around the luggage before returning to your room.

I know this seems like overkill but if you ever get bedbugs you will gladly apply these helpful tips the next time you travel, trust me..

Traveling With Essential Oils

You have been cooped up inside your house all winter long. Your cabin fever is so high you feel like you are burning up. Spring break is almost here and you can’t wait to get away for a week or two. You have been planing this trip for weeks now and your itinerary is all laid out. Why not let essential oils help you deal with any glitches in your travel plans. They will help in making your vacation go smoothly.

The Excitement Builds: The closer you get to the day of departure the more excited you become. This is especially evident when you have children. Using geranium and lavender essential oils in your child’s bath will help in keeping anxiety levels at a minimum before and during your trip.

The Drive: Travel sickness is a problem many people struggle with. Peppermint oil is excellent for calming an uneasy stomach. Before you leave place a drop of peppermint oil in a warm glass of water with one half teaspoon of honey and sip. This will keep your stomach settled for a long time and can be used for children and adults alike. Another option would be to bring a small bag of sugar cubes. Place a single drop of peppermint oil on each cube. If you start to feel a little nauseous, take one of your sugar cubes and suck on it. A nifty device for your drive is an essential oil car diffuser. These little units plug into your cigarette lighter and work extremely well. A good car diffuser is very inexpensive. Only about 10 to 15 dollars and are well worth the price.

Ginger is another essential oil you should take along for the ride. Although it is better known for treating seasickness, it also works well in alleviating other types of travel sickness. If you do not have a car diffuser yet, you can place a couple of drops on a cotton ball or tissue and place them on the front and rear dashboards. In more extreme cases mix 4 drops ginger with 1 teaspoon carrier oil and rub over your abdomen.

Traffic jams can be very frustrating and set you on edge. Keep you and your passengers cool and calm by placing 1 drop of lavender, eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil on a tissue or cotton ball and putting them on the front and rear dashboards. These oils will sooth your nerves and keep them from fraying. Under these conditions these essential oils will not make you sleepy! You will be able to stay on a more even keel, relaxed yet more aware. With a car diffuser you will not have to use tissue and cotton balls.

Exhaust fumes can cause nausea. If that traffic jam has you choking and gaging place eucalyptus on cotton balls or tissue around the inside of your car. This will help to counteract the smell from the exhaust.

The Flight: Flying presents us with an entirely new set of problems to deal with. The pressurized air is dry and can cause dehydration, swollen feet and ankles, cramps, dry skin and headaches. Then you are always bumping your knees on the seat in front of you.

Before you flight drink a cup of peppermint tea using 1 drop of peppermint oil and a teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water. This will keep your stomach settled and help to keep it from feeling bloated or extended. Gases in your abdomen tend to expand during flights and peppermint oil will help alleviate these problems.

If you are anxious or nervous about flying you need to take preemptive measures. Before your flight place1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of geranium essential oil on a tissue. Put this tissue in a zip lock bag. When you begin to feel uneasy , pull the tissue out of the bag and take 4 or 5 deep breaths. Now lie back, close your eyes and relax. This will also work should you find yourself becoming irritable during your flight.

Children on long flights can become fidgety and irritable. Have ready a small bottle with 15 drops chamomile in 2 tablespoons of coconut or almond oil. Before things get out of control, massage this mix on their legs and feet. They will soon settle down. You and those around you will have a much more pleasant flight. Plus you will have plenty of this mix left should you need it later during your vacation.

For swollen feet and ankles mix 5 drops lavender or eucalyptus oil into a teaspoon of almond oil. Massage on feet and ankles in an upward motion toward the bottom of the calf. This will work wonders at reducing the swelling.

Are you prone to leg cramps. Have a compress made up before you take flight. Get a clean handkerchief, wet it so it is just damp. Place 5 drops of geranium on the cloth and store in a zip lock bag. When you feel a cramp coming on, take out your compress and place it over the affected area.

If you are over 5' 8" tall your knees are going to bump the seat in front of you. If your knees get bumped and sore use a compress as mentioned above. With this compress however, use 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Rub this compress all over your knees. This will relax the muscles and reduce the bruising from being bumped around.

Your Arrival: Once you reach your destination there are a couple of things you should do to ensure your stay is a pleasant one. Even though there are clean sheets on your bed there are also thousands of dust mites that feed off dead skin cells which we are constantly shedding. A precautionary measure to take especially where young children are concerned. Pull back the bed cloths. Then with a tissue that you have placed a few drops of thyme, lavender and lemongrass, wipe the mattress. Very few microorganisms can escape this combination of essential oils exterminating effects. Another method that works well is to place your blend of thyme, lavender and lemongrass in a spritz bottle with a half once of water. Spray this combination over the bed cloths and allow to dry before climbing into bed for the night.

It is never easy to rest when you are in a strange bed or new environment. The bed isn’t as soft or firm as you are used to. There is a mass of new sounds that you haven’t heard at home. Other hotel guest coming and going. The ice machine at the end of the hall. The elevator whirring up and down and sirens from police cars and ambulances. All these sounds can interrupt your sleep if your not used to them. Use scents that you have been using at home. This will bring about a feeling of familiarity helping you to relax and allowing you a more restful sleep.

Reality Check: All the excitement and fun you have had over the last week or two has come to an end. Now comes the shock of having to return to those classes or your career. Getting back into your routine can be tough. Placing 2 drops each of peppermint and geranium essential oils on a tissue and taking an occasional whiff will help get you over the shock of reality. The peppermint will keep you alert while the geranium will calm your stress levels while you readjust to your routine.

It’s an event not to be missed, something that people travel to from all over Barbados, but for guests at Little Arches it is only a stroll down the beach. By the way the best fish is to be found where the queue is longest. As befits top accommodation in Barbados you will enjoy the most stunning views of the Caribbean from the hotel, and the rooms, and the Palm Island Room as an example has a full kitchen, and a hot tub for two on the outside deck where there is also a table, umbrella and chairs, with a King sized bed, and room for a couch and a dining table. You will be completely ruined by the flat screen TV, CD Player, high quality linens and furniture, and last but not least high quality shampoos and soaps.

The hotel has ten rooms, each unique, and the grounds are beautifully maintained It is a classic boutique hotel, and could give you the perfect Barbados holiday, because it is small, intimate, and totally relaxing, and a quality you might not expect from its situation.away from the tourist areas. Another feature is the no children policy, which adds to the peaceful tranquil atmosphere.

Few places in the whole world can match the sheer beauty and fascinating culture of Nepal. Adventure travellers rave about it, and more and more people are preparing for the first trek based on the positive reviews of others. The trouble is, trekking in Nepal isn't as simple as booking a beach holiday or taking a city break – it's a serious undertaking that requires a lot of thought and preparation. Fortunately, the rewards exceed these negatives, so beginners should not be put off! Here's a list of things you should know before you go trekking in Nepal for the first time… When to go? Spring or autumn are without a doubt the best times to go trekking in Nepal. It's around 15 to 25 degrees centigrade in spring, and between 10 and 15 degrees in autumn. Which of these you pick depends on your own tastes – in spring, the forest's flora is in full bloom, while autumn's clear skies present unparalleled mountain views. As for the other months, winter is just too cold for most tastes – well below freezing at nights on higher elevations. Summer would be ideal, if it weren't monsoon season – 80% of the country's rainfall is between the months of June and September, so it's best to be avoided! Where to go? The most important thing is to not overstretch yourself in Nepal. Trekking is not for the faint of heart (both figuratively and literally!), and you can't just head up Everest on your first trip! That said, all of Nepal's trekking regions have areas that are suited to beginners. The best advice here is to not overstretch yourself, and to find a tour operator who clearly outlines the strenuousness of their routes. Do a little research and you should be able to strike up the right balance between difficulty and pleasure fairly easily. Before you go? Above all else, it's important to make sure you have the proper vaccinations before you head out to Nepal. These include Hepatitis A, Polio, Typhoid, Tetanus and Rabies vaccinations. You may have had some or all of these before, but in the case of Rabies and Tetanus, they have a time limit on their effectiveness. The next big concern is what to drink. It's best to boil or purify any water you get locally, as drinking unclean water will really ruin your experience! Finally there's altitude sickness, which some people suffer from. Typically this does not affect people until they're over 10,000 feet, though so if you're sticking to lower treks you should be fine. If you are planning on heading over 10,000 feet for the first time, the bad news is that there's no way of knowing if you suffer from altitude sickness until you see the first symptoms. The best advice therefore is to move to higher altitudes slowly over a period of days, which will give your body the chance to acclimatise. If you find you are suffering, the solution is to move to a lower elevation – which you should do if you begin to recognise the symptoms: nausea, dizziness, headaches and/or insomnia. What to take? A fairly common question is what sort of clothes travellers need to take for a Nepal trek. The key to being comfortable for your trek is layers: Always be able to add and remove clothes as you need and you should be fine, no matter what the weather throws at you. Hiking shorts and trousers with T shirts and sun hats should see you fine at lower altitudes. If your Nepal trek takes you above 10,000 feet, you will want to bring insulated trousers, gloves and a strong jacket. When you're out there… The last thing you want to do on your Nepal trekking holiday is to cause offence to the locals. To that end, there are some local customs, and rules that you should be aware of. Pointing is considered rude (both at people and statues), shrines and Chorten should be passed in a clockwise direction and hand shaking is not the norm when greeting new people – putting the palms together in a ‘praying style' is expected. There are also various rules to do with the feet – stepping over the feet of someone is considered rude and shoes should be removed upon entering someone's home or any of the shrines. One of the oddest customs is to not stand next to someone who is eating, while it is perfectly acceptable to sit or kneel next to said person. If you follow this advice, and you have an appreciation of natural beauty, you're bound to get hooked. Fortunately, there are many excellent Nepal trekking routes, and no two are ever the same. You won't be able to resist visiting time and time again…

What Milan's Sightseers Think Of The City

They say that if you want to know the truth about a city, you should ask a taxi driver. The wisdom behind this is that they know the streets, and have chatted to locals for years, making them more reliable than any guide book. Well, I'm not a taxi driver, but I'm the next best thing: I'm a Milan airport transfer driver, and am always keen to offer my passengers recommendations on what to do and see. However, the real intrigue comes on the return journey – hearing passenger comments has given me a real insight into which of Milan's sightseeing highlights are really worthy of your time. Here's some of the feedback I've picked up over the years: The Duomo The iconic cathedral is one of the first things Milan's holiday makers are keen on seeing when they visit. Generally speaking, people who have visited the famous building are full of praise for it's beauty and stunning architecture, though a few have noted that its insides are comparatively drab and dull. What everyone says though is that you should be sure to head up to the roof for the highlight of your Milan holiday. Although it costs a few Euros to take the stairs or lift, I have lost count of the number of passengers who haven't been able to praise the stunning views of the city enough! The consensus is that a visit to the Duomo is an essential part of your Milan sightseeing, even if you are not Catholic! La Scala Opera The opera house isn't to everyone's tastes, by any means, but if you love your classical music or simply think that La Scala is something you should experience, Milan holiday makers are blown away… if they can get a ticket! Most of the tickets are like gold dust – and paying a small fortune does not even mean you will be able to see. Indeed, many of the seats are labelled listening only, while others will suffer neck strain trying to get a decent view of the performance. That said, those who have been have nothing but positives to say about the atmosphere and the wonderful architecture of the old theatre. San Siro/Stadio Giuseppe Meazza The home of Inter and AC Milan gets special praise from visitors to the city. Although many just take the stadium tour (which, be warned is not available on matchdays), plenty of my shuttle clients have taken in full matches. The advice is to take the 3rd tier seats if possible – as you get to walk up the spiral ramps get to your seat, taking in some great views along the way, as well as getting a splendid view of the whole pitch. Prices compare favourably to watching football in the UK – between £10 and £20. Far cheaper than watching a Premiership match, and arguably a better standard of football! It may not be a conventional part of Milan sightseeing, but my passengers have nothing but praise for one of the most famous stadia in Europe. Castello Sforzesco Many castle buffs I've met on my Milan airport transfers state that the Castello Sforzesco is not only visually appealing, but also a fascinating insight into the country's middle-age history. It is not – like many British castles – furnished in period fittings, but instead houses hundreds of artefacts, antiques and relics from the city's history. If that's your thing, I'm reliably told you could be busy here all day! Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II This architecturally appealing boutique shopping area of Milan is a favourite for visitors on their way from the airport, but often they have been left disappointed by the limited array of shops and aesthetics. Others seem to feel it's an outstanding day out though, so perhaps it's a case of expectations too high for those who are disappointed. In all my years in providing Milan airport transfers, I've never met anyone who has been disappointed with their stay in Italy's cultural city. What's more, a fair proportion of them declare that they'll be back again in the next few years, given the amount there is to see and do. And when they do – assuming they take my Milan airport transfer – I'll be on hand to offer them advice based on what my other customers have recommended!

After booking and confirming your travel arrangements, you may realize that you still need some more information even as you prepare for the trip to Africa. Some of the questions that you will have, relate to money – for example, the value of your home-country money in relation to local destination currency. You will probably need to know how much would be enough to cater for your needs. You will certainly need to know in what form you need to carry the money – whether cash, credit card or in form of checks. The guideline below, although apt for travelers to East Africa, may apply to most other African destinations. Ultimately, the most reliable and current advise should come from your chosen African Safari Outfitter. How To carry your money Cash and travellers' checks each have advantage. Obviously cash is more readily exchanged and accepted and command a better exchange rate in East Africa. Travellers' checks on the other hand, are replaceable in case of lose. You should carry a combination. Decide what proportion of each to carry, according to your own taste or convenience against the risks that may arise. Try for a diversity of denominations such that you have a mix of smaller, medium and a few or the larger denominations of your home country currency. You can change money at slightly less than standard bank rates in most hotels. Traveller's checks cannot be changed at hotels and lodges; it can only be done at banks and financial institutions. Credit Cards Major credit cards (and debit cards with Visa or Master Card logos) offer you a superb emergency back-up. Every traveller should carry one, even if you don't plan on using it. If your air ticket is lost, or you need to fly home in an emergency, your credit card can make this possible. Your credit card will be accepted in better shops in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, so if you develop an unplanned infatuation with an expensive art object, you can buy it without having to carry hundreds of dollars in cash or checks. Please remember to keep your receipts in case you have questions about the conversion or exchange rate. Also keep your receipts as a proof of purchase. How Much Money To Take Do not count on being able to withdraw cash with a credit card, a debit card or an ATM card. Whilst this service is becoming increasingly available, it might not be functional/available on some of the areas you might be visiting. Plan to carry enough money to cover your expected expenses, plus a small reserve. Your credit card can be your financial emergency back up kit. By far, the biggest variable in your budget may as well be your taste for souvenirs. You take a few meals on your own; these will cost between $10 and $15 each, including a 10%-15% for tipping. You might also spend a bit on telephone bills, laundry and drinks. Other incidental expenses may arise from domestic and regional airport departure taxes. This may happen in cases where your itinerary includes some internal flights and the tickets do not include the local departure tax. In such cases, these figures are variable depending on the dates of travel, the airport in question and even the country. A confirmation closer to your dates of travel with your Safari Outfitter may give you an idea. Most people on our trips carry between $500 and $600 (for a two weeks visit) for all extra expenses. For those who want suggestions, we offer the following guidelines. You may budget for between 2% and 3% of the entire cost of your trip. Always remember that amounts given, if any, are personal decision, and if travelling in a group, every group member does not have to give the same amount. US dollar cash is preferred for tipping safari staff. At the end of your trip, if travelling in a group: a volunteer group member can 'pass the hat' and present a collective tip to your drivers/guides. If it's trendy clothing you're looking for you'll be pleased to know that many new retail shops have opened offering you the opportunity to be a trend setter back home with one of the hot new California looks. All of this shopping can make a person tired. Rejuvenate with an iced latte from Star Bucks then be prepared to shop some more!

With all of the activities available at the beach, don't forget to take the time to just absorb the moment. Take a relaxing stroll down the beach and let your worries be carried away. Sit in the sand and allow the tranquil, awe-inspiring colors of the sunset as it sinks into the vast Pacific Ocean. Disneyland Paris Theme Park In France

Disneyland is the ultimate place to take your children for fun, fantasy and an exciting time they will never forget and with the Disneyland Resort Paris being accessible to over 300 million people that can fly there in under two hours and around 60 million people that can get there with not more than a 4 hour drive, it is the perfect destination for anyone living in Europe.

Plans to build a Disney park in Europe were first discussed in the 1970's, yet construction did not begin until the 1980's at the location just outside of Paris and it was first opened in 1992.

It did not have that instant success the owners hoped for, but many years down the road, Disneyland Paris Resort has become one of the most popular holiday destinations throughout Europe and with the complex expanding to include the Disneyland Park with its five themed areas and the Walt Disney Studios Park that opened in 2002, it does not take much imagination to know why it is so popular now!

When it comes to the themed areas, we found the Fantasy Land with the Disney characters such as Snow White and Mickey Mouse was a highlight for the young children especially the girls, but the boys loved Frontier Land, which has a Wild West theme and it even brought back childhood memories of playing Cowboys and Indians for the adults that never seem to grow up!

Disneyland Paris is open every single day of the year without exception and has a completely different feel in winter compared to summer, but whatever time of year you visit, you are sure to have a lasting memory of the fantasy castle that is the centrepiece of the whole park.

The Sleeping Beauty's Castle or in French called Le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant, is a truly magical sight that was inspired by classic fairytale illustrations rather than being based purely on a true chateau like the castle at Disneyland Florida and everyone loved going down to the dungeons, but for us it was the terrific view from the castle balcony where we could see some of the other things we wanted to explore that made us realise we should have arranged to be there longer!

Something you will find when at Disneyland Paris is the amount of different types of restaurants and snack places offering a wide choice of cuisine and catering for every budget, plus they are all designed around the theme for whatever area of the park you are at. So from hotdogs to pizza and Mexican to French cuisine, plus sandwiches, cakes, pastries and ice cream, there is always going to be something that everyone will enjoy, but our favourite place to eat was the Cowboy Cookout, which is in a barn and they had a country music band playing at the time, while we were eating our BBQ chicken!

But Disneyland Paris has expanded so much since being open a day is not really enough time to enjoy everything, so staying at one of the themed hotels can be a great experience in itself and with 7 hotels to choose from like one with rustic charm to one that makes you feel like you are in a desert, they cater for all budgets and some will not break the bank.

Yet thinking about the costs, there are some great deals available at all different times of the year including deals such as children under 7 going free, an extra night for the same cost, etc, so you do not really need to have large pockets, although do make sure you have enough spending money for all of those gifts, souvenirs, food and extras that you know the children keep begging for, especially with the large amount of fantastic shops on site!

And you cannot forget about the Walt Disney Studios Park either, which is another reason why we feel you need more than a day here, as here you can even have a tour of a recording studio and view rock memorabilia including signed guitars on display.

The whole park has a great amount of different attractions that will cater for every age group, so apart from the fabulous roller coaster rides, if you would rather keep your feet firmly on the ground then there are some terrific shows featuring the well-known Disney characters, plus there is a very good 18-hole golf course and the Disney Village has lots of restaurants and shops, which are open after the park closes, so you will never run out of places to go and things to see and do.
