If you have never tried golf in France – why not?

We hear plenty of those lovely golfing holidays in Spain and Portugal, those lovely greens and great sun that our friends are always telling us about. But Normandy has this and much more to offer.

Whether you are a serious golfer, a novice or someone like myself who is looking for a fun day out the beautiful course at Bagnoles de l’Orne in Lower Normandy caters for all.

I had played a little before so, when our golfing enthusiastic friends, who were staying in a French cottage in the nearby village of Juvigny sous Andaine, asked my husband and I if we would like to have a go, I off course, said ‘Why not’. I had driven past the course often and thought (as you do) ‘I must try that some time’. We simply went along, paid the cheap day fee, and without any need to make an advanced booking, started playing.

My first experience of golf in France was very different from what I had experienced before. I had images of hordes of professional golfers all in a hurry, waiting impatiently in line and edging us ‘novices’ to move on. Instead, we had a wonderful, relaxing, even if amusing 3 or 4 hours on a lovely almost empty green that seemed to stretch forever, under a beautiful blue sky. The green was perfect, we had winding rivers and sand banks to keep us on our toes and as the course lies on the edge of the Normandy National Forest Park we didn’t mind the occasional interruptions from the local wildlife.

Ever since then we play regularly. Often towards the end of our time at the course we take advantage of the practice putting green beside the clubhouse (where we have had many a light refreshment – ‘the French way’) and then we might take a short stroll into the very pretty village of Bagnoles where you sit by the lake and soak in the local atmosphere of a French spa town.

I have met many people and made friends at the golf club. There are those, like ourselves, who golf regularly and like the slow, quiet pace that you can go round the 9 holes (soon to be 18); and, there are others like our golfing friends who love to spend their frequent visits to Normandy golfing. Some have even taken annual membership and come over, stay in a local gite, and participate in the competitions, which take place in the summer.

So, if you happen to pass Bagnoles de l’Orne some day ‘why not’ come along to the Golf Course. Or even better rent a gite and make a week of it! For a challenging course, in beautiful natural surroundings Bagnoles is worth a visit. If it happens to be on a Monday I might be there – I’m the one still having to carry a ball scoop!!

Baotou - The Biggest City in Inner Mongolia

Lying on the Hetao and Tumochuan Flatlands and situated in the northern banks of the Yellow River, Baotou is the largest city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous region, in the People's Republic of China.

Baotou is only 600 km from the capital city, Beijing. Located in the southern region of the Mongolian Plateau, Baotou has to the north the Gobi Desert. With an area of about 28,000 square kilometers, Baotou is a strategic location that connects the Bohai Economic Zone with the north-west.

Baotou is credited to have the country's largest rare earth industrial base, and is also much famed for its facilities that are available for the production of steel, iron, machinery and textiles. Since it is located in the Yinshan-Tianshan region, the area surrounding Baotou abounds in mineral resources, and it is estimated that there are more than 400 mines for several resources such as metals, non metals, and energy.

However, Baotou is not only famed as an industrial city but also a great tourist spot with a rich history dating back to the Neolithic Age, which is of more than 6000 years old. The present site of Baotou was once inhabited by Mongolian nomads as well as grazers. Later, the Qing Dynasty occupied this Neolithic site, and established it as a city. Disneyland Vs. Disney World

Among the Disney enthusiasts, the big debate has always been: 'Which is the better Disney - Disneyland or Disney World'. Of course, the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is much larger than the one at Disneyland, but some say that the one at Disneyland has the true spirit of Walt Disney; after all, he built it himself. . . and so the debate goes on.

The Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney wanted to create a family park and initially planned to build it on 8 acres of land. This was too small for his dreams, and today, Disneyland, California, is spread over 180 acres. This was something no one had attempted before. Construction began on July 21, 1954, and Disneyland was opened for public on July 17, 1955. The Magic Kingdom included five different lands:

- Main Street, U.S.A., which was the typical turn of the century city Main Street
- Adventureland, an "exotic tropical place" in the remote jungles of Asia and Africa
- Frontierland, where a person has to relive the pioneer days of the American frontier
- Fantasyland, where classic stories of everyone's youth became realities for youngsters of all ages to participate in
- Tomorrowland looked at the marvels of the future

After its success, Walt Disney had a vision of a much larger amusement park. Initially, 27,000 acres of land was bought in Florida and work started on what Walt Disney called Disneyworld.

After his death, his brother Roy changed the name to Walt Disney World. Walt Disney World, or more commonly Disney World, today is spread over 30,500 acres or about 47 square miles. Disneyworld is gigantic when compared to Disneyland.

The Magic Kingdom of Disneyland was recreated, on a grander scale, at Disney World, with Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland. The Main Street buildings of Disneyworld were bigger and more impressive, and even the castle towered higher in comparison to the original version in Disneyland.

Disneyland and Disney World

The added attractions of Disneyworld include three more theme parks and two water parks, in addition to the above mentioned Magic Kingdom. These are:

- EPCOT
- Disney's MGM Studios
- Disney's Animal Kingdom
- Typhoon Lagoon
- Blizzard Beach

The two main attractions of EPCOT are the Future World and World Showcase. The Disney-MGM Studios offers you an opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes. You can explore the pre-historic animal world and the world of animals at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Don't give out personal information out loud. Write down the information or speak softly so no one else will overhear. Do not give out financial or personal information while talking on your cell phone. Do not work on confidential files while on the airplane. You don't know if the person behind you is staring through the gap in between the seats.

Use the buddy system if you can when visiting the bathroom. Some bathrooms across our nation are used for meeting places for men or women looking for a good time. Direct all questions to airline employees, security or police if you need information.

When traveling through airport security be sure to place your valuables and all metal objects in your carry-on and not the small trays they provide you at checkpoint. Do not place money clips with your paper money still attached in the small trays. You are really asking for trouble. It is no small matter; according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one half of US travelers heading to another country will experience some sort of health problem while abroad.

Ever since the Michael Moore film, "Sicko," came out, we all know that many other countries (well, specifically France, Canada, and Cuba) provide affordable, sometimes free, healthcare to their citizens, but how does it work for us, Americans, abroad? Well, the truth is, unless you make special preparations, the outlook is not good. There may be exceptions, and you should look into the fine print of your plan, but every major US health insurance providers suggests getting some form of traveler's insurance. Unfortunately, there is no foreign country that provides free health care for travelers.

Travel insurance plans provide three types of coverage: for medical care when abroad, the cost of emergency medical evacuation, and reimbursement for sudden trip cancellations and lost luggage.

Most volunteer programs are based in Beijing or Shanghai. These two great cities are a very attractive place to stay whilst doing your project work.
